How To Cut Off Apartment Utilities
When your about to move out of your apartment home giving notice to your landlord is important. But don’t forget about turning off your utilities. This should be an important part of your move out checklist.  We have put together some short suggestions that should help you deactivate your services quickly and without hesitation.

Services You Want To Contact

If you have a landlord or Internet through your telephone line, simply contact the provider and set up a certain deactivation day.  Some apartments will pay for water and electricity. If you set them up personally then it will be your responsibility.  If your moving into a new home or apartment, you may be able to simply transfer it over. Always give yourself a couple extra days just in case.

Better To Be Safe Than Sorry

You don’t want to be one of those renters who forgets to shut off the utilities and you are billed for the next tenant’s usage.  So don’t wait for the last second. A month or so before you lease will terminate contact all the providers on the same day and make sure the service is discontinued. And if you are transferring services, make the necessary arrangements at this time.

Many renters allow their providers to automatically debit the accounts on a monthly basis so their bills are paid on time.  And if you forget to deactivate automatic drafting, your account may be debited. So take the extra time and make sure stop automatic drafting.  Sometimes you rent cable boxes or routers from your provider. If you need to return those items, arrange for a drop off or pickup.

The best time to schedule the shut off of all your utilities is the day after your supposed to move out. It gives you one extra day just in case your delayed. Remember to check again with your landlord about services your responsible for shutting off.

Shop Around

When your looking to move services or add new ones, be sure and shop around for the best rates. Once your out of a contract, there will be several options for you. Its a good idea to look online or call the provider to see who can give you the best pricing.

Remember to contact new service providers a few weeks in advance. Don’t wait till the day before. It can take several days to get service up and running.
