Sharing an apartment with a friend or just someone who will be your roommate is hard enough. Not getting in each others way and respecting each persons space probably is important to both of you. Although you both probably will have separate bathrooms and bedrooms, there usually is only one kitchen. And if you have lived with a roommate in the past, you are probably used to the fact food has gone missing and dirty dishes seems to pile up endlessly.
But all is not lost. You can still make your kitchen an enjoyable place for both of you. Here are some tips that will help ease your pain and frustration in the kitchen.
Set Up Some Rules
There is not reason that each of you cannot respect one’s space in the kitchen. Just set some brief guidelines and remember to be as clear as possible. Will one person do the cooking for both of you, or will each of you be responsible for preparing your own meals.
If both of you eat at the same time, or have similar schedules, cooking or preparing meals side by side can be fun. Or you might be the type of person that likes to eat or cook alone. Be especially clear when it comes to dividing up food expenses. And sometimes one roommate will have special dietary needs that require special attention.
Who Will Make the Purchases
This is probably one of the more difficult situations to overcome. In the majority of situations, both roommates like to eat different types of foods or different brand names. So its a good idea for both renters to purchase their own food. And both of you will want to be on the same page about sharing food. Don’t eat the other roommates food.
But there are always items that both of you will consume together. For example most everyone will eat milk and bread. So each of you can take turns purchasing these types of items.
If somehow both of you have exactly the same types of food habits, then you guys can go ahead and split the food bills right down the middle. Just try not to hog to much of the milk or jelly.
Don’t Disrespect my Tools
As you would in any roommate situation, you probably have brought some of your own personal items into the apartment home. If you have expensive appliances make sure your roommate knows that its important to you.
